Ghana raises public transport fares by 20% from June 2, 2026

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana announced a nationwide 20% increase in public transport fares, effective 2 June 2026. The hike applies to trotros, shared taxis and inter‑city services. Operators cite rising fuel prices, higher costs for spare parts, tyres, engine oil, batteries and increased vehicle maintenance expenses as the primary drivers of the adjustment.

COPEC Ghana’s executive secretary, Duncan Amoah, supported the increase, describing it as a necessary response to mounting operational pressures and calling for transparency in how the new fares are calculated. Updated fare charts will be displayed at lorry stations, and task forces together with the police will enforce compliance and penalise overcharging. The decision follows a recent government‑mandated fuel‑price reduction that had temporarily halted fare hikes.

Commuters are expected to bear higher travel costs, potentially affecting household budgets and the price of goods and services due to increased distribution expenses.
