Ghana records 1,492 road accident deaths in first half of 2026
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) reported that 1,492 people died in road accidents in Ghana between January and June 2026. This averages to approximately 250 deaths per month. NRSA Public Relations Officer Simbiat Wiredu identified poor driver behavior, specifically excessive speeding and traffic violations, as the primary causes of these fatalities.
In a related development, the Commercial National Motor Riders Union has attributed a significant portion of motorcycle crashes to the rise of underage riders. Union spokesperson Setsoafia Quarshie Pascal emphasized that strict enforcement of minimum age laws is necessary to reduce accident rates. The union also called for greater caution from other motorists, noting the vulnerability of motorcyclists on the road.
