Ghana rejects blanket mining nationalisation, stresses partnership with multinationals
Ghana’s Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah‑Kofi Buah announced that the government will not pursue a blanket nationalisation of multinational mining companies. He said any actions will be handled case‑by‑case within existing legal frameworks, pointing to recent state takeovers of the Damang Mine and Adamus Resources as isolated decisions. Buah emphasized the need for stability, predictability and investor confidence, and contrasted Ghana’s approach with the retroactive reforms seen in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso.
At the same time, Ghana Chamber of Mines CEO Ken Ashigbey called for greater Ghanaian participation in the extractive sector through joint‑venture partnerships rather than exclusion. He argued that such collaborations would increase local ownership, technology transfer and value capture while keeping the sector attractive to foreign investors.
