Ghana advances agricultural technology and critical mineral investment
Ghana is advancing several strategic economic initiatives focused on agriculture and critical minerals. Through the ‘Feed Ghana’ programme, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture aims to connect over 70,000 farmers in cooperatives with West African agribusinesses and technological solutions. The initiative seeks to improve productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and drive import substitution. Reported gains include maize production exceeding national consumption, while rice and poultry self-sufficiency have seen notable increases.
In the mining sector, a private equity team led by former Gold Fields CEO Chris Griffith, Ghanaian mining veteran Sir Sam Jonah, and former Goldman Sachs banker Colin Coleman is seeking to raise US$1 billion. The fund intends to invest in Africa’s critical minerals, such as copper, cobalt, lithium, and rare earths, which are essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure. This move highlights growing interest in African mineral supply chains as global economies seek alternatives to China-dominated markets.
Additionally, industry leaders in Accra have emphasized the necessity of an ‘AI transfer test’ to ensure that digital skills training for the workforce translates into measurable improvements in everyday industrial workflows, particularly within the automated mining sector.
