Ghana requires $22.6 billion for climate resilience by 2030

Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) estimates that $22.6 billion will be required by 2030 to implement the country’s climate action plans. Dr. Derek Sarfo-Yiadom, a senior officer at the EPA, announced this figure during a presentation at the ECOWAS Parliament in Accra, emphasizing the need for measurable outcomes, identifiable budgets, and stronger early warning systems to protect communities and livelihoods.

Beyond financing, experts highlight a critical need for improved infrastructure and specialized education. Current engineering training in Africa is often criticized for failing to equip graduates with the technical skills necessary to solve continent-specific challenges, such as building climate-adaptive cities, resilient drainage systems, and sustainable energy grids. Addressing these vulnerabilities is seen as essential to preventing disasters similar to the 2015 Accra floods, which caused significant loss of life and exposed weaknesses in urban planning.
