Ghana Revenue Authority probes missing containers at Tema Port

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has established a nine-member investigative committee to look into the alleged unauthorized removal and disappearance of 28 containers at Tema Port. The probe follows a petition from importers and their representatives regarding containers that were reportedly found empty, missing, or transferred to private warehouses without owner knowledge during the customs clearance process.

The missing consignments allegedly contained various goods, including cyanide, pharmaceuticals, textiles, alcohol, and food products such as condensed milk, sardines, and tomato paste. Petitioners claim some containers were offloaded into private warehouses near the GHACEM enclave, while others were moved out of the port entirely.

Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong appointed Commissioner of Customs Aaron Kanor to chair the Fact-Finding and Investigative Committee. The GRA stated the allegations are serious due to their potential impact on revenue assurance, port security, and the authority's reputation. The matter has also been reported to the Tema Regional Police Command, which has reportedly made some arrests.
