Ghana Schedules Power Outages in Accra, Ashanti, Central Regions and Kumasi

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced scheduled power outages across parts of Accra (West and East), Tema, the Ashanti Region, and the Central Region beginning on July 26. The cuts will run for seven days, typically between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., to allow emergency maintenance and system upgrades aimed at fixing faults and improving reliability.

In the Ashanti Region’s capital, Kumasi, residents will face intermittent outages for up to four months while GRIDCo carries out major transmission upgrades. The work includes installing two new 161 kV transformer lines at the Anwomaso substation, completing a 330 kV Accra‑Kumasi line, and expanding the Kumasi‑Anwomaso‑Kintampo network. Funding comes from a recent 9 % tariff increase, with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) overseeing the projects and requiring clear outage timetables.

Both sets of disruptions affect households, businesses and workers who rely on daytime electricity, and ECG has apologized for the inconvenience. The regulator warned that consumers can file complaints if outages occur outside the published schedules.
