The Ghana Scholarships Authority (GSA) has denied reports that the University of Memphis terminated its scholarship agreement due to unpaid tuition debts. Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, Director-General of the GSA, stated that the five-year partnership, signed in April 2023, remains in effect until 2028. He noted that no official or unofficial notice of termination has been served, and any termination would require a 90-day prior written notice.

To address outstanding financial obligations, which have been reported to approach US$4 million, the Government of Ghana released US$500,000 to the University of Memphis on August 26, 2026. This payment was made through the Ministry of Finance following advice from the GSA.

Mr. Asafo-Agyei is currently in the United States for scheduled engagements with University of Memphis officials. These discussions aim to develop a roadmap for resolving the remaining debt and establishing a sustainable approach to meeting future financial commitments.
