Ghana SEC chief calls for stronger crypto regulations in Africa

Dr James Klutse Avedzi, Director-General of Ghana’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has called for enhanced regulatory frameworks to keep pace with the growing virtual asset market across Africa. Speaking at the launch of the African Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) 2026 in Accra, Avedzi noted that the continent’s participation in digital assets is already significant and requires clear rules to protect individual and institutional investors.

Avedzi highlighted tokenisation as a major opportunity for the continent. By converting assets such as real estate, gold, carbon credits, and trade receivables into digital tokens, African markets could see increased liquidity and improved access to a global pool of investors.

To support this growth, Ghana has implemented the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154), which Avedzi described as a foundation for the supervised development of the sector. He emphasized that regulation must balance the need to support innovation with the necessity of preserving confidence in financial markets.
