Ghana SEC prioritizes investor protection to drive capital market growth

Ghana’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is prioritizing investor protection as a core strategy to transform the nation’s capital market into a vital source of long-term economic financing. Mensah Thompson, Deputy Director-General of the SEC, stated that while the regulator must balance supervision with the need to avoid suppressing innovation through excessive costs, investor interests will take precedence in cases of conflict to maintain market trust.

The regulator is navigating a period of recovery following disruptions from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). The SEC’s 2025 Annual Report indicates a strengthening fixed-income market, with cumulative trade volumes reaching GH¢245.85 billion in 2025. Looking toward 2026, the Commission expresses cautious optimism, aiming to deepen market resilience through new guidelines on market making, securities lending, and borrowing to support continued macroeconomic stabilization.
