Ghana secures €323m to resolve water crisis in northern regions

The Ghanaian government has secured a €323 million financing package for the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project to address persistent water shortages in Tamale, Yendi, and Damongo. The funding includes a €225 million concessional facility from the European Investment Bank, a €68 million grant from the European Commission, and a €30 million grant from the Dutch government’s Invest International initiative.

President John Dramani Mahama stated that newly installed heavy-duty pumps at the Dalong waterworks are expected to become fully operational next month, providing “immediate relief to Tamale’s water supply.” The broader EU-financed expansion project aims to build piped water networks across the northern regions, benefiting approximately 1.5 million people by improving access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and public health.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson announced the package following meetings with European Investment Bank Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle. The project is intended to bridge the northern infrastructure deficit, support climate resilience, and create a foundation for economic growth and job creation in the region.
