Ghana secures funding for new modern airport in Wa

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that full funding has been secured for the construction of a modern airport in Wa, located in the Upper West Region of Ghana. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has obtained the necessary resources, and the procurement process is complete with contractors already selected.

The new facility is intended to replace the existing airstrip, which the President described as no longer fit for purpose. The project aims to provide 24-hour operational capabilities, including modern navigational equipment and airfield runway lighting for night landings.

Beyond improving passenger travel—reducing the journey from Wa to Accra from approximately ten hours by road to roughly 75 minutes by air—the airport is expected to support regional economic growth. Expected benefits include enhanced general aviation, support for agribusiness through aerial crop spraying and rapid airfreight for perishable goods, and increased tourism opportunities.
