Ghana pursues BRICS partner status amid economic and security concerns

Ghana is pursuing partner-country status with the BRICS economic bloc, a move approved by the Cabinet to diversify economic partnerships and attract investment. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the decision aligns with Ghana’s non-aligned foreign policy and aims to support industrialization. However, the move has drawn criticism from analysts who warn of potential economic exploitation of Ghana’s natural resources and the risk of being overwhelmed by industrial giants like China and India. Additionally, the shift has raised concerns regarding potential trade retaliations from the United States, following threats by President Donald Trump to impose heavy tariffs on countries aligned with BRICS or those attempting to replace the US dollar.

Separately, the Ghanaian government has completed the repatriation of 1,964 citizens from South Africa following episodes of xenophobic violence. Minister Ablakwa assured the public that the government remains prepared to conduct further evacuations should the security situation for Ghanaians in South Africa deteriorate further. He noted that since 2025, Ghana has successfully evacuated more than 6,300 nationals from various distress situations globally, including missions in Libya, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
