Ghana selected to host 2028 Olympic boxing qualifier

Ghana has been selected to host the 2028 Olympic Boxing African Qualification Tournament. The event is provisionally scheduled to take place from August 13 to August 22, 2027, following a successful bid by the Ghana Boxing Federation.

World Boxing Director of Events, Paulo Ferreira, officially notified the Ghana Boxing Federation of the decision on October 21, 2026. To proceed, the International Olympic Committee and Ghana must formalize a ‘Host City Agreement,’ a binding legal contract that outlines operational parameters and responsibilities for local expenses, including public security, medical services, and infrastructure upgrades.

Under the current institutional framework, the Ghanaian government, via the Ministry for Sports and Recreation and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, will be responsible for costs such as transportation, accommodation, and boxing infrastructure. Historically, major sporting bodies like the IOC retain primary commercial revenues from broadcast rights and sponsorships, while host cities manage the local expenditures.
