Ghana shifts economic focus toward gold formalization and digital growth
Ghana is undergoing a structural economic shift driven by formalizing its gold sector and expanding its digital infrastructure. To stabilize the economy and strengthen the cedi, the government is utilizing GoldBod (Ghana Gold Board) to formalize artisanal and small-scale mining. This initiative aims to reduce smuggling and increase foreign exchange reserves by centralizing the purchase, testing, and export of gold through official channels.
Simultaneously, the digital sector is becoming a primary driver of national growth. In the second quarter of 2026, Ghana recorded a 6.0% annual GDP growth rate, with the ICT sector surging by 30.9%. This digital momentum is being supported by infrastructure projects, such as a partnership between the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and CSquared Ghana Ltd. The project aims to lay fiber optic cables along existing Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) power lines to expand broadband access to northern regions more cost-effectively.
These developments signal a transition toward a more service-oriented and connected economy, where digital connectivity and formalized commodity exports play increasingly central roles in macroeconomic stability.
