Ghana Speaker Bagbin Opens New Dialysis Unit in Upper West Hospital

On 4 August 2026, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin commissioned an expanded dialysis unit at the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa, Ghana. The project, costing about GH¢4 million, added six state‑of‑the‑art dialysis machines and supporting equipment, and was delivered in partnership with Sustainable Health Education and Interventions Limited (SHEILD), the Upper West Parliamentary Caucus, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and other development partners.

Bagbin highlighted the facility as a step toward healthcare equity, noting that patients with chronic kidney disease previously travelled long distances to Accra or Kumasi for treatment. He said, “The people of the Upper West deserve to live with dignity. We deserve access to quality healthcare.” The new unit is expected to ease the burden on patients and families, improve renal‑care capacity at the hospital, and reduce travel‑related costs and hardships for the region’s residents.
