Ghana Speaker Bagbin urges voters to reject political propaganda
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament in Ghana, has called on voters, especially the youth, to resist political propaganda and unrealistic campaign promises. Speaking at the launch of the book ‘Voices for the Ballot: Electoral Communication in Ghana’ by Dr. Nana Sifa Twum, Bagbin emphasized the need for citizens to make informed decisions by assessing policy proposals and comparing political alternatives.
The Speaker noted that political discourse in Ghana is frequently dominated by slogans, emotional appeals, and personality-driven campaigns rather than substantive policy discussions. He urged voters to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully and responsibly, distinguishing between campaign pledges and actual policies, as well as between allegations and established facts.
Bagbin also encouraged academics, researchers, and journalists to collaborate and examine the country’s democratic practices to identify limitations and recommend improvements for strengthening public accountability and institutional credibility.
