Ghana Sports Minister mandates residency for next Black Stars coach
Ghana's Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, has announced that the next head coach of the Black Stars must reside in Ghana. The government has communicated to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that residency is a non-negotiable condition for the successor to Carlos Queiroz.
Adams stated that a coach who only visits the country for matchdays cannot effectively serve as a national team coach. He emphasized that the appointee must spend meaningful time in the country, while allowing for occasional trips to Europe for scouting purposes.
The search for a new coach follows a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, which saw Ghana lose to Ivory Coast and The Gambia. A five-member committee has been established by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports to interview candidates. In the interim, an interim technical team is expected to lead the squad for upcoming matches against Somalia.
