Ghana Standards Authority warns against uncertified mattresses
The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has launched a crackdown and sensitization campaign against the sale of uncertified mattresses that pose significant health and safety risks. Investigations revealed that some manufacturers are replacing polyurethane foam with unapproved materials like polystyrene and polyethylene-based packaging, which can cause respiratory irritation, spinal misalignment, and increased fire risks due to non-compliance with flammability standards.
In a recent operation involving the Ghana Police Service SWAT team, several companies—including Yin Yuan Jia Limited, Mooda/Monda Ghana Mattresses, and Rockfoam Mattresses—were sealed in the Greater Accra Region and Ashaiman. The GSA is conducting market visits in areas such as Makola, Kantamanto, Madina, and Tema to educate retailers and consumers.
Authorities warned that manufacturers, distributors, and retailers found selling non-conforming products face fines ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 penalty units under the GSA Act, 2022. Officials urged the public to look for the GSA certification mark and to be wary of mattresses that are unusually cheap or emit strong chemical odors.
