Ghana Stock Exchange shows strong annual returns despite recent selloffs
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has demonstrated significant volatility, characterized by both high year-to-date returns and recent short-term selloffs. By the end of August 2026, the GSE emerged as Africa’s top-performing equity market in local-currency terms, delivering a 71.27% return. This performance was driven by improving macroeconomic conditions and a sharp expansion in trading activity. In US dollar terms, the exchange recorded a 59.09% return, ranking second among 14 assessed African markets.
Despite these strong annual gains, the market has recently faced downward pressure. In a single trading session, the total market capitalization plunged by approximately GH¢2.4 billion, falling from GH¢283 billion to GH¢280.6 billion. The benchmark GSE Composite Index also declined by 0.85% to close at 14,759.87 points. While these recent movements indicate a challenging short-term phase and a deterioration in sentiment, the index maintains a substantial year-to-date gain of 68.29%.
