Ghana struggles to maintain momentum against illegal mining

Efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in Ghana are facing significant setbacks and political complications. Environmental advocacy group A-Rocha Ghana has warned that the country is losing momentum in its campaign against the practice.

Daryl Bosu, Deputy National Director of A-Rocha Ghana, stated that the nation has failed to maintain the progress expected following a helicopter crash last year that killed eight people, including senior government officials. Bosu described the current situation as “hopeless,” noting that the initial national momentum generated by the tragedy has dissipated and leadership on the issue has faltered.

The struggle against illegal mining remains deeply intertwined with national politics. While previous administrations faced intense pressure from civil society organizations and religious leaders to declare a state of emergency, the current political landscape involves complex dynamics between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and various stakeholders who previously campaigned for regime change under the banner of environmental protection.
