Ghana study suggests specific diets may mitigate air pollution effects
A study conducted by the University of Cape Coast in Ghana suggests that specific dietary interventions may help mitigate the health impacts of air pollution on outdoor workers. The Dietary Intervention to Mitigate Air Pollution health effects among street hawkers and vendors in Accra (DIMAP) study followed 307 street vendors in Accra for 12 months.
Led by Professor Kofi Amegah, the research focused on workers exposed to high levels of pollutants along busy roads. One group of participants received a weekly supply of foods including oranges, peanuts, sunflower oil, eggs, and sardines, while a control group maintained their usual diets. Air quality monitoring during the study recorded average PM2.5 levels of approximately 40 micrograms per cubic metre along the routes used by the vendors.
