Ghana Survivor Network’s Jerry Turns Child Trafficking Past into Advocacy on Lake Volta

Jerry was lured into exploitative child labour on Ghana’s Lake Volta when he was about nine years old. He spent two years hauling heavy fishing nets, enduring beatings, starvation and near‑drowning. His mother, after learning the truth, rescued him and he returned home malnourished but determined to resume his education.

He later became a pupil‑teacher and a vocal advocate against child trafficking. In 2022, Jerry joined the Ghana Survivor Network, was elected leader of its Courageous Crew chapter, and works to ensure no other child suffers his fate. He says, “I was supposed to be there for four years,” and recalls his mother’s words, “When I heard what was happening to my son, my heart broke.” The story is highlighted by International Justice Mission (IJM).
