Ghana targets economic transformation through strategic gold mining

Ghana is seeking to transform its economy by leveraging its vast mineral wealth, specifically targeting the exploitation of an estimated 3 trillion ounces of gold still underground. Isaac Tandoh, CEO of the Minerals Commission, stated at the 2026 China Mining Conference that the government will only permit extraction through partnerships that prioritize value creation, job opportunities, and skills development for Ghanaians.

The strategy aims to move beyond a model of simple extraction for export toward one of industrial integration. Proponents suggest that the significant procurement spending by mining companies—which totaled approximately US$7.14 billion in 2025—should be used to anchor domestic manufacturing. By developing local industries to supply mining inputs such as chemicals, machinery, and protective equipment, Ghana intends to convert mineral demand into long-term industrial growth and wealth creation.
