Ghana Teacher Unions Issue One‑Week Ultimatum Over Unimplemented Service Conditions

Three pre‑tertiary teacher unions in Ghana – the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre‑Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) – have warned of a nationwide strike if the government does not act within a week. They demand the implementation of long‑standing provisions, including a clear promotion pathway for deputy directors and a 20 % incentive for teachers in hard‑to‑reach communities. The unions say these measures were pledged in conditions of service dating back to 2009 and reiterated in a 2024 agreement that expired in July 2026, yet none have been applied. PRETAG vice‑president Adokwei Ayikwei‑Awulley cited an unfulfilled presidential directive by former President John Dramani Mahama, stating: “If nothing concrete is done, we will advise ourselves. We’ll use all possible means at our disposal to ensure we get what we are supposed to get.” The unions have given the government until the end of next week to show tangible progress, threatening industrial action otherwise.
