Ghana to implement $7,000 monthly fee for digital TV broadcasters

The Ghanaian government has announced a new financing plan for the National Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) network. Starting in January 2027, television broadcasters using the platform will be charged a monthly fee of $7,000. Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Sam Nartey George stated that the tariff was developed following a review by a specialist committee to ensure the platform's long-term financial sustainability. The government plans to implement the charges through a phased, graduated support model alongside existing state subsidies to help local broadcasters adjust.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism regarding its economic impact. NPP communicator Awal Mohammed warned that the proposed monthly transmission charge could lead to the collapse of many television stations by the end of 2027. Mohammed noted that many stations operate on thin profit margins and expressed concern that the new costs could force regional broadcasters out of business, leading to massive job losses and downsizing even among larger media organizations.
