Ghana to introduce electronic property rate collection system
Ghana's Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to overhaul the property rate collection system by introducing a centrally controlled electronic mechanism. The reform aims to eliminate cash transactions at the local level to combat inefficiencies, inconvenience, and corruption.
Under the new system, property owners will make payments via mobile money platforms or electronic bank transfers. Ayariga noted that the current regime is plagued by revenue leakages where funds often end up in private pockets rather than being used for public services.
The government intends to improve service delivery in communities—such as repairing roads, drains, and maintaining greenery—to encourage voluntary compliance. The new system is being developed in consultation with the Ministry of Finance and development partners to ensure accountability and fair property valuations.
