Ghana to observe National Sanitation Day on October 3
Ghana will observe National Sanitation Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The event also serves as the country’s national commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs announced that the flagship exercise in Accra will be held in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). Activities are scheduled to begin at Rawlings Park, with cleanup efforts extending to various locations across the metropolis.
The Ministry has called upon all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to mobilize residents and stakeholders. It also urged traditional and religious leaders, businesses, schools, and civil society organizations to support the initiative. The goal is to move beyond periodic cleaning and foster a culture of environmental responsibility in homes, markets, and workplaces.
The global theme for World Cleanup Day is ‘From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,’ focusing on reducing food waste. Ghana’s national theme is ‘National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact.’
