Ghana to replace grid-powered streetlights with solar systems nationwide

The government of Ghana has announced a nationwide plan to replace conventional, grid-powered streetlights with solar-powered systems. Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, stated that the transition aims to improve the reliability of public lighting, as solar units can operate independently even if individual units are damaged.

Under this new policy, all new road projects and streetlight replacement works will prioritize solar technology. The transition is being led by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor. The move is expected to create a more resilient lighting system while reducing the country's dependence on the national electricity grid.

Additionally, Minister Agbodza addressed recent traffic light failures on the Accra-Tema Motorway, noting that investigations revealed underground cables had been removed, rather than the failure being caused by the Electricity Company of Ghana.
