Ghana to tighten review of Gold Fields' Tarkwa mine lease renewal

The Ghanaian government confirmed its intention to renew the mining lease for Gold Fields' Tarkwa gold mine, but warned that the process will not be a simple automatic extension. The Minerals Commission will require the South African miner to submit detailed development plans for assessment by a technical committee, followed by a ministerial‑level review before any decision is made. Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah‑Kofi Buah said the aim is to secure partnerships that transfer expertise and create more opportunities for Ghanaians, not to pursue blanket nationalisation. The Tarkwa operation, which produced about 427,000 ounces of gold in 2025, has a lease set to expire in 2027. The stricter scrutiny follows the government’s rejection of Gold Fields’ request to renew the lease at the Damang mine last year, after which the state assumed control of that asset. Industry groups have warned that uncertainty over lease renewals could affect investor confidence in Ghana’s mining sector.
