Ghana Tourism Minister orders removal of illegal structures near heritage sites

Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for the immediate removal of unauthorised structures surrounding the nation’s forts, castles, and other heritage sites. Speaking at a symposium regarding the Korea-Ghana Heritage Project in Accra, the Minister warned that increasing encroachment, particularly within designated buffer zones, threatens the character and long-term preservation of these historic assets.

Ms. Gomashie emphasized that the demolition of illegal structures must be accompanied by meaningful engagement and education of local communities. She noted that inadequate consultation often leads to resident resistance, as people may not fully grasp the historical and cultural significance of the monuments.

To safeguard these sites for future generations, the Minister urged a collaborative approach involving government institutions, traditional authorities, and local stakeholders, stating that protecting national heritage is not the sole responsibility of the government.
