Ghana economy sees tourism growth and trade surplus in 2025
Ghana's economy showed significant shifts in 2025, characterized by growth in tourism and a transition to a trade surplus. The tourism sector welcomed over 1.3 million international visitors, generating approximately US$4.34 billion in revenue. Domestic tourism also grew by 7%, with the top 10 attractions accounting for a large portion of national visits.
In terms of trade, Ghana's merchandise exports reached US$32 billion in 2025, surpassing imports for the first time in nearly two decades. Gold remains the dominant export, accounting for 63.1% of total export earnings. This concentration has raised concerns regarding economic vulnerability to global commodity price fluctuations.
However, the energy sector continues to face financial challenges. Despite a 40% cumulative tariff increase for consumers, the sector recorded a US$1.4 billion shortfall in 2025. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the government to maintain quarterly electricity tariff adjustments to mitigate fiscal risks and improve financial sustainability.
