Ghana Trade Ministry supports creative arts for prison rehabilitation
Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has endorsed the Ghana Prisons Service for utilizing creative arts to facilitate inmate rehabilitation and skill development. Speaking at the inaugural Director-General and Adehyee’s Art Exhibition, Deputy Trade Minister Sampson Ahi emphasized that artistic engagement helps incarcerated individuals rediscover talents, rebuild confidence, and prepare for economic independence upon release.
Mr. Ahi advocated for correctional facilities to move beyond mere custody toward providing practical opportunities for personal growth. He suggested that inmate art exhibitions could serve as sustainable platforms to identify talent, attract public-private partnerships, and connect inmate works to commercial markets, thereby contributing to national development and entrepreneurship.
Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, stated that the initiative aligns with the ‘Think Prisons 360 Degrees’ philosophy. This strategy aims to transform the institution from a strictly custodial system into one focused on rehabilitation, sustainability, and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
