Ghana transport unions announce nationwide shutdown for November 4
Five transport unions in Ghana, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, have declared a nationwide shutdown of commercial transport operations on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
The unions stated the strike is a response to the government and Ghana Police Service failing to enforce Regulation 142 of L. I. 2519, which prohibits trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways. Drivers argue that the occupation of these spaces by traders makes it difficult to operate within designated areas.
Furthermore, the unions expressed frustration with the TRAFFITECH-GH traffic monitoring system. They claim drivers are being fined for traffic violations while authorities fail to address the traders occupying the bus stops. All commercial drivers have been instructed to park their vehicles on the scheduled date until further notice.
