Ghana transport unions suspend planned nationwide strike
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended a planned nationwide sit-down strike following negotiations with government officials. The industrial action was intended to protest the failure of authorities to clear traders from roadways and designated bus stops, which operators claimed compromised vehicle and commuter safety.
During a meeting on November 3, the Ministers of the Interior, Transport, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs met with union representatives and officials from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD). The government provided assurances that measures would be taken to address the occupation of road corridors.
As part of the resolution, transport operators have been asked to identify specific hotspots where trading activities obstruct transport spaces. This list will be submitted to the Ministry of Local Government to facilitate removal efforts by Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). The unions stated they expect their concerns to be addressed within 30 days, failing which they may resume industrial action.
