Ghana and Sierra Leone advance AI integration in education
Ghana and Sierra Leone are implementing major initiatives to integrate artificial intelligence into their national education systems.
In Ghana, the TVET Service has partnered with UNESCO, KPMG, and Microsoft under the ‘AI EmpowerED’ initiative. This program aims to train at least 100,000 technical and vocational facilitators in AI and digital competencies to ensure instructors can navigate risks like misinformation and algorithmic bias while preparing students for a digital economy. Additionally, Ghana has signed an agreement with Intel Corporation to scale AI education in K-12 classrooms through the ‘AI for Youth’ programme.
In Sierra Leone, government leaders are addressing the dual nature of AI. The country has launched a national awareness campaign regarding AI and deepfakes to promote technological benefits while cautioning against misinformation. At the United Nations General Assembly, Sierra Leonean officials have advocated for AI integration that considers local realities, such as limited digital infrastructure and the need for foundational literacy, rather than relying solely on models from high-income nations.
