Ghana University Administrators Strike Over Senior Staff Pay Gap

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) resumed a nationwide strike on Monday, 10 August 2026, after suspending it earlier. The action, announced at GAUA’s National Congress in Sunyani, targets widening disparities in market premium and related allowances between teaching and non‑teaching senior members of public universities. GAUA’s newly elected president, Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, presented the decision, noting that teaching senior staff now receive an average market premium of about GH¢10,000, while non‑teaching senior staff receive roughly GH¢4,718 – a gap of more than GH¢5,000.

GAUA highlighted that, although an agreement signed with the government in April 2026 granted a 40 % increase in consolidated market premium for non‑teaching senior members, the disparity persists. The union has petitioned the National Labour Commission and other state bodies for intervention but reports no response. It stresses that the strike seeks equitable remuneration for all senior university staff, not opposition to teaching members, and calls on the government to address the inequities.
