Ghana university administrators strike threatens exam credibility

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) is conducting an industrial strike that threatens the credibility of examinations at public universities. GAUA National President Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah warned that because key administrators responsible for coordinating exams, student records, and academic affairs are participating in the strike, any examinations held without their involvement may face difficulties regarding validation and auditing.

Rev. Amoah noted that institutions proceeding with exams do so ‘at their own risk,’ questioning how certificates and transcripts could be verified if the responsible officials are not involved in the process. The strike has already led to the postponement or disruption of examinations at several institutions.

In response, Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, met with GAUA leadership and university management to discuss resolving the dispute. The negotiations addressed several grievances, including salary adjustments, market premiums, job evaluations, outstanding allowances, and retirement arrangements. The Minister appealed for a suspension of the strike to restore industrial harmony before the new academic year, promising to engage the Ministry of Finance and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to address the union’s concerns.
