Ghana university sector sees governance clash: BTU suspended, UTAG rejects GTEC plan

The Vice‑Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU‑G) suspended Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) from all association activities on June 26, 2026, citing a governance crisis that included the termination of Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, the demotion of two senior officers and a warning to another official. The association said the university’s governing council failed to engage in mediation and ignored directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and a presidential mandate limiting day‑to‑day administration by governing bodies.

Separately, the University Teachers Association of Ghana – University of Cape Coast branch (UTAG‑UCC) issued a statement on June 29, 2026 rejecting GTEC’s proposed framework to harmonise promotion guidelines for academic staff across public universities. UTAG‑UCC argued the plan exceeds GTEC’s statutory mandate, infringes on university autonomy, and would undermine the distinct mandates of comprehensive, specialised and technical institutions. The union called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposal and urged the Ministry of Education to respect the autonomy of university councils and academic boards.
