Ghana university students increasingly depend on AI for coursework

Students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication's Institute of Journalism in Ghana report that artificial intelligence tools now draft essays, create presentation slides, summarise readings and even write code, making academic work easier for those balancing studies with employment. While many cite convenience, some notice a decline in their own writing ability after heavy reliance on AI.

Universities are responding by employing detection software such as Turnitin, but AI consultants advise that disciplinary decisions should not rely solely on algorithmic reports. They recommend combining technological checks with human judgment, including oral defenses and ongoing assessment of individual writing styles to preserve academic integrity.
