Ghana Vice President calls for ECOWAS cooperation on climate change

Ghanaian Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for enhanced regional cooperation to address the impacts of climate change across West Africa. Speaking at the joint opening of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Second Extraordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar in Accra, she noted that climate change is driving environmental degradation, population displacement, and increased insecurity throughout the region.

Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that because these challenges transcend national borders, the response must be coordinated. She advocated for increased investment in vulnerable communities to bolster food security and protect livelihoods, viewing these as essential components for maintaining regional peace and stability. She also reaffirmed Ghana’s historical commitment to Pan-Africanism and regional integration, stating that the success of ECOWAS should be measured by the ease with which citizens can move, trade, and work across West African borders.
