WASSCE 2026 results show decline in English Language performance

The 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) show a significant decline in English Language performance. The pass rate for English (grades A1–C6) fell to 62.4%, a decrease from 69% in 2025 and a continuous downward trend from 73.11% in 2023. Approximately 56,000 candidates received an F9 grade in English, which may prevent direct admission to many degree programmes.

In contrast, performance in other core subjects improved. Social Studies saw the most substantial increase, with A1–C6 grades rising from 55.82% in 2025 to 78.04% in 2026. Core Mathematics also improved, rising from 48.73% to 60.75%, while Integrated Science increased from 57.74% to 62.08%.

For students who do not meet university degree requirements due to these results, alternative pathways such as Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes remain available. These routes cover various fields including business, computing, engineering, and agriculture.
