Ghana Water Company Limited implements rationing in Accra

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced a new water rationing schedule for communities in Greater Accra to manage limited supply. The company is targeting three to four days of water supply per week for the hardest-hit areas as it works to repair the Teshie Desalination Plant and re-engineer parts of its distribution network.

Stanley Martey, GWCL’s Head of Public Relations and Communication, stated that affected areas are being divided into three or four zones. A formal schedule will be published once the zoning exercise is completed. The rationing is necessary because water demand in Accra continues to exceed production capacity, a situation exacerbated by the shutdown of the desalination plant in late 2025.

While some residents in the Tema East region and Ashaiman have reported improved water pressure following recent technical interventions, many communities have endured weeks of scarcity. The company is currently redistributing water from the Weija and Kpong treatment plants to compensate for the desalination plant's closure.
