Ghana Water Ltd denies Presidency orders to hide river pollution data

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has denied allegations that the Presidency ordered the company to withhold data regarding river turbidity and pollution levels. The company addressed these claims following a social media video involving a journalist, stating that the accusations are inaccurate. GWL clarified that while it conducts internal turbidity tests for water treatment and shuts down plants when levels exceed safe limits, it does not hold official data on natural river bodies. The utility noted that monitoring rivers and maintaining turbidity records falls under the mandate of the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Separately, GWL management has issued warnings to residents in the Agbogbloshie area of Accra against illegal water connections and the use of unauthorized inline booster pumps. During a community engagement, officials emphasized the need for responsible water use and the prompt settlement of bills. The company is also working to eliminate unauthorized pipelines, known as ‘spaghetti lines,’ and warned that offenders would face legal sanctions.
