Ghana Women's Movement plans nationwide protest in Accra
The Ghana Women's Movement has announced a nationwide demonstration titled the ‘Women’s Voices Matter Demonstration,’ scheduled for September 29, 2026, in Accra. The protest aims to address the increasing intimidation, arrest, remand, and imprisonment of Ghanaian women exercising their right to free expression.
Organizers, including Janet Asana Nabla, state that the movement seeks to protect women's rights to participate in politics and criticize the government without fear of retribution. The coalition includes representatives from various political parties, market associations, and professional sectors such as hairdressers and dressmakers. Male sympathizers have also been invited to join.
The demonstration is set to begin at 6 am at Opera Square. During the event, the movement plans to present a petition to Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The petition will outline demands regarding dignity, equality, and the full implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024. Additionally, the group is calling for enhanced economic opportunities and better access to capital for women.
