Ghana yellow fever vaccination reaches 92% in Wa West
Yellow fever vaccination coverage in Ghana’s Wa West District has reached 92%, with 225,446 individuals vaccinated. The campaign targets people aged nine months to 60 years. Ghana Health Service Director-General Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea reported that 92,768 females and 79,238 males have received the vaccine so far. He noted that only one mild headache has been recorded as a side effect among the vaccinated population.
To reach 100% coverage, health authorities plan house-to-house mop-up operations under Free Primary Health Care. This effort includes collaboration with Veterinary Services to reach nomadic Fulani herdsmen. To support these operations, 100 motorbikes have been allocated to the Upper West Region, with 15 already arrived. The remaining bikes will be assembled in Wa by local mechanics receiving maintenance training.
Dr. Kaba also addressed resource shortages, specifically in the Siriyiri Electoral Area, where only two nurses serve 2,360 people across five communities. In response, he ordered the immediate release of five motorbikes to the area to assist health services.
