Ghanaian authorities investigate fatal Hamile dynamite explosion
A dynamite explosion in Hamile, located in the Lambussie District of Ghana’s Upper West Region, resulted in the deaths of one Ghana Immigration Service officer and two civilians on 3 November 2026. The incident occurred when a patrol team attempted to intercept a motor tricycle carrying explosives along an unauthorized route toward Burkina Faso.
The Ghana Immigration Service reported that the tricycle rider attempted to flee during the inspection, leading to the detonation. While no evidence currently links the blast to organized armed groups or terrorism, the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has called for a comprehensive probe into how the explosives were acquired and transported. FOSDA also noted reports suggesting an officer may have discharged a firearm at the vehicle prior to the blast, a claim that remains under investigation.
Following the explosion, unrest was reported in the border community, including alleged attacks on immigration installations. A farewell ceremony was recently held for the victims, attended by members of the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Police Service.
