Ghanaian businesses launch initiatives to support SMEs and trade reform

In Ghana, financial and telecommunications institutions are launching initiatives to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and address structural trade barriers.

Fidelity Bank Ghana has called for trade reforms, including more integrated systems and improved data quality, to assist entrepreneurs and women-led businesses. During the Breaking Barriers to Trade conference, bank executives highlighted that disconnected customs systems and poor data hinder commerce. They noted that while artificial intelligence offers potential, its success depends on accurate information. The bank also pointed to the upcoming Publican AI System in 2026 as a way to complement existing customs management technology.

Simultaneously, MTN Ghana has launched the third edition of its SME Accelerate programme. This initiative aims to integrate small businesses into the formal economy through training, digital tool subsidies, and market access. Key offerings include the Yellow Biz package, which provides connectivity, email, and website services at reduced costs, and Ajumapa, a product line specifically designed to support women-owned businesses.
