Ghana Chief Justice faces calls for resignation over partisan remarks
Ghanaian Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is facing intense scrutiny and calls for resignation following remarks made during visits to state-owned enterprises, including the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). The Chief Justice reportedly praised the performance of these institutions under the current administration, questioning the governance of the previous eight years.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the comments as partisan, accusing the Chief Justice of acting as a “party propagandist” and undermining judicial neutrality. Other critics, including Professor Isaac Boadi and the group PAGA, warned that such public appraisals could create a perception of bias and damage public confidence in the judiciary's independence.
Conversely, supporters such as IMANI Africa's Franklin Cudjoe and NDC communicator Hamza Suhuyini have defended the Chief Justice, arguing he is entitled to express personal observations on national governance.
Separately, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has raised concerns regarding the efficiency of the Supreme Court, noting that the institution is being clogged by unnecessary interlocutory appeals that stall substantive legal proceedings.
