Ghanaian citizens killed in New York spark calls for justice

Two Ghanaian nationals have been killed in New York within a single week, prompting diplomatic engagement from the Ghanaian government.

On October 29, 2026, 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was fatally shot while walking to DreamYard Preparatory School in the Bronx. Police report that three individuals in hooded clothing and surgical masks approached and shot the teenager near Crotona Park before fleeing through a subway station. Frimpong’s father stated that the boy had been experiencing bullying at school, noting that two students had been suspended days prior to the incident.

Following this, the body of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, a Ghanaian caregiver, was discovered at a Bronx dumpsite on November 3, 2026. Owusu had been reported missing nearly two weeks earlier.

Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has visited the families of both victims to convey condolences. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa assured the families that the Ghanaian government will work with United States authorities to ensure justice is served. Additionally, the mother of Javits Frimpong traveled from Ghana to New York following an expedited visa approval to attend her son’s funeral.
